MARRIAGE PROCEDURES

A Japanese citizen or Foreigner, seeking to get married with Vietnamese national, is advised to follow the below steps:

1/ Kindly check with the Shiyakusho nearest to your residence for further instructions on related marriage procedures.

In case the applicant is non-Japanese citizen, kindly check with your nearest respective country’s Diplomatic Mission or Consular Office for the related marriage procedure for further instructions.

2/ Vietnamese national should also check with the Consulate General of Vietnam in Osaka for the marriage procedures needed (Procedure No.1, for example) before apply for marriage registration at the local Japanese local authority.

3/ The Dual will need to apply for marriage registration to the local Japanese authority (for example: Shiyakusho).

4/ Once all the paperwork above is completed, both parties are requested to proceed to contact Consulate General of Vietnam in Osaka to apply for the Excerpt of Certificate of Marriage/ Report of Marriage (kindly refer to Procedure No. 2 below)

Procedure No.1:

I/ Application for Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage

The Document shall include the following documents:

1/ Application form (download here)

2/ Certificate of Marital Status, issued by the People’s Committee of a commune, ward or township, or an overseas Vietnamese Diplomatic mission or consular office (sample here)

If such document does not state its validity period, it will be considered valid for six months from the date of issuance;

3/ Certificate of Marital Status/Single Status issued by the related Competent Japanese Authorities (Shiyakusho/Kuyakusho) where Vietnamese citizen registered for residence upon arrival in Japan. The Certificate(s) should indicate that the Applicant has not registered/applied for marriage at the above-mentioned Shiyakusho/Kuyakusho when he/she stayed there (Sample here);

Note:

(*) Vietnamese national is advised to contact the related Shiyakusho/Kuyakusho in order to obtain the/these above-mentioned certificate(s).

(*) In case of any difficulty in obtaining the/these above-mentioned certificate(s), Vietnamese national is advised to submit the Affidavit of Single Status (Sample here). The Consulate General would verify the document on case by case basis.

4/ Orifinal Certificate of Residence (Jyuminhyo);

5/ 01 Copy of Residence Card (2 sides);

6/ 01 Copy of Page 2&3 of Passport;

7/ In case of applying for the above procedure by mail, it is advised to use Letterpack mail which has the tracking number (in order to track your documents/package easily)

A prepaid return envelope: if the applicant requests the visa be returned by mail, please use service of the delivery service company. A prepaid and self-addressed envelope must be enclosed with applicant’s passport, application form, visa fees and other current fees (if needed, such as visa approval arrangement fee, processing fee, shipping, handling and expedite services).

To avoid losses during delivery, it is advised to use certified mail such as Letterpack 520¥ (sample here)/ Yupakku (Sample here) with tracking number for your easy tracking.  The Consulate General shall not be responsible for any missing documents due to your choice of using uncertified mails.

Procedure No.2: 

II/ Application for Excerpt of Certificate of Marriage

The Document shall include the following documents:

1/ Application form (download here);

2/ Original Document/Certificate of Acceptance of Marriage issued by the Competent Japanese Local Authority (Shiyakusho);

3/Original Certificate of Residence (Jyuminhyo) of both Parties;

4/ Copy of Residence Card of both Applicants;

5/ Copy of the page 2&3 of both Applicants. In case of having no passport, Japanese national can use Driving license;

6/ Copy of the Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage issued by the Vietnamese Embassy/Consulate General previously (if any).
